It Kathûs: meetings in a centuries-old farmhouse
In It KathûsAt Het Hooivak, a centuries-old farmhouse in the meadow bird area near Akkrum-Nes, you can rent it for gatherings of up to approximately fifty people: meet and celebrate on hay bales, in the middle of nature. Pean-buiten is developing this place together with nature organization It Fryske Gea.

What is It Kathûs? It Kathûs is a centuries-old farmhouse in the open countryside near Akkrum-Nes. For the community, it is a blessing that It Fryske Gea has become the owner.
In this way, the farm is preserved and given a meaningful new function that connects people and nature. The doors of It Kathûs are open. For people with ideas. For those seeking peace.
For those who want to buy local products from the surrounding farmers. And for everyone who wants to contribute to a place with impact – from and for the community. Why? The Frisian peat is subsiding and emitting a lot of CO₂.
The black-tailed godwit and other meadow birds are losing their habitat. At the same time, farmers, researchers, and citizens are searching for new forms of agriculture, nature management, and a sense of purpose.
Therefore, this place, untouched and full of history, is given a new role. How? We are starting simple. In the first phase, we are using the farmhouse in its current state.
Think of gatherings in the barn – perhaps even on hay bales. This will be followed by a simple, sustainable restoration. What can you rent already? The old Hooivak, for a gathering of up to about fifty people.
You sit on hay bales. There is a toilet. Other than that, there is nothing, and that is exactly the point. The Hooivak is not insulated, so the season runs from May through September. The price is available upon request and online booking is not possible. You cannot sleep here.
That can be done on Pean-buiten Akkrum, 3 kilometers away. It Kathûs will become a place where farmers, policymakers, and researchers collaborate on solutions for peat, food, and birds.
Organizations and individuals in the midst of change can also work there temporarily. The place offers calm, direction, and space. Visitors are preferably invited to come on foot from Akkrum station, or by shuttle or carpool.
The impact on the landscape remains minimal. How? It Fryske Gea owns the farm and the 42 hectare meadow bird area around it. Their involvement is crucial.
